The CILINDRO family lamps were created in 1966, in a period in which the designers who were part of the ADI-FAD were trying to consolidate the new profession, within a primarily functional and austere style, free of superfluous ornaments. The lampshade is the essence of a lamp, the main element that has the function of diffusing light, and which is complemented by a structure, support or mechanism to place this light source in space. With the aim of differentiating the essential from the complementary, I decided that the screen would be everything, that I would dispense with the rest of the traditionally established structural accessories, such as the foot and the base, to generate a single volume that covered all the functions. In the current version, with the intention of providing the whole with more warmth, we have incorporated a subtle ash wood profile on the back to locate the lamp holder and replace the original methacrylate element that performed this function. Joan Miró and Josep Lluís Sert, painter and architect, understood this conceptual synthesis and chose the Cylinders to illuminate different spaces in their respective houses in Ibiza, due to their light diffusion and integration into that pure and rationalist architecture.
